The Destination Wedding Checklist Nobody Gives You

You've always dreamed of a cliffside ceremony in Amalfi, or a vineyard wedding in Tuscany, or a sunset celebration in Santorini. Now you're actually doing it. And you quickly realise that planning a destination wedding is an entirely different beast from planning locally.

The Legal Requirements (Start Here)

This is the most important step and the one couples most often underestimate. Every country has different legal requirements for marriage. Some require: residency periods (you may need to be in the country 3-14 days before the ceremony); translated and notarised documents; a local marriage officiant; specific documentation for non-citizens. Start researching this 18 months out.

The Guest Logistics

When you're getting married abroad, your guests are essentially planning a holiday to attend. That's a lot to ask. Help them: Book a room block at 2-3 nearby hotels at different price points; Create a travel information page on your wedding website with visa requirements and transport options; Give plenty of notice — save-the-dates should go out 12-18 months before.

The Vendor Challenge

You'll likely need to work primarily with local vendors, which means communication across time zones and languages. Where possible, hire a local wedding planner at the destination — even for a partial planning fee, they'll save you months of stress and thousands in mistakes.

The Weather Backup Plan

Outdoor ceremonies at coastal or vineyard venues are stunning. They're also weather-dependent. Always have a backup indoor space confirmed with your venue, even if it costs extra.

The Budget Reality

Destination weddings can cost less than local weddings in some categories — venue costs are often significantly lower in Southern Europe. But add: flights for the couple and wedding party, accommodation for multiple nights, and the total spend is higher. Don't assume "it's abroad, therefore it's cheaper."
